A greeting A La Madea. So, how's everyone? I'm good... sort of. I'm under pressure like crazy right now with my apps due in 6...5 days and my lines having to be down pat by Monday. And... something else... hm... oh well.
We got back from Tucson today and it was awesome. I got to spend tons of time with my grandparents and Riisa, my 26 year old aunt. She's a lawyer. And we met up with my Great Aunt Carol and her kids... who would be my second cousins? IDK... Aha! First cousins once removed. I thought all that removed nonsense meant divorce, but apparently it means generations! Whaddayano... Anyway, John and Margot, my FC2R's were there and that was great. Margot and I had a lot of fun capping on the waitress and John-o (as we call him) talked to me about college apps a bit. I didn't know how much crap dentists have to go through! Good thing I'm choosing an easier but much more fickle career. But seriously, John-o is a big inspiration to me. He's so successful and smart and cool. Doesn't he sound like... i dunno... someone cool? And Margot's an absolute riot. Kudos to her and her fiance.
Hm... What else is there to say? I'm scrounging for audition material. I think I might call someone over at SAVAPA for help. A teacher, of course. Whaddaya think I am? A traitor?
Oh, and speaking of traitors, speaking of savapa, SOME PEOPLE on myspace are complete social asses. End of story.
Well, I'm going to sleep now. I have way too much to do tomorrow. OH YEAH! The other things I had to to were my notes for Whitehead and my senior research paper. Yeesh.
Peace out, y'all.

Whole Lotta Crap to Say
Hey guys, happy Veterans Day. I'm still alive. I went to DC and you can find photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/defy_gravity_moo
I loved the east coast and want to live there!
Cuckoo's Nest is going OK. Not much to say there. I'm trudging through the applications, though I've been putting off the writing. Hopefully I'll get a lot done over next week's break.
Well, I've now seen Jersey Boys twice! And both times it was awesome. Shoutouts go to Courter Simmons, the amazing understudy who was on for Valli on Thursday, as well as my old teacher John Altieri as Crewe, and my man Eric Gutman who I got to see go on for Gaudio on Sunday. Complete awesomeness both days. And I got tons of autographs. Y'know what? Shoutouts to the entire cast who are so fiercely talented! Jersey Girls, you rock.
Hm... what else? I'm going to be catching up a lot this week in school. And I need to memorize my lines for Cuckoo's nest. And I just HAVE to say it here: I was making fun of Avril's new song "When You're Gone" in a high pitched voice. I had just sung "When you're-" and then this a-hole pulled out of Jack in the Box and turned LEFT! ILLEGAL!!! So it went like this: "When you're FUCK YOU! RIGHT TURN ONLY!" Reina screamed and I almost choked.
Hm......................... Not much else to say, guys. This is a short one. Hopefully there'll be more to talk about next time.

Hey... I Still Exist!
Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a while!
Where to begin? So far we've done the readings for Cuckoo's nest and we've had one blocking rehearsal. Ralph Moreno of 96.1 KSIQFM is our director. Not Mr. C. Weird. But he's doin' good. Mr. C is the producer. And he appointed me to do costumes. WTF? Whatever. I'll have fun with it I guess.
Ooh! On Thursday, the hospital had it's annual charity gala! This years theme was Opening Night on Broadway and Kayday Pricola asked me to greet people in full tuxedo gear and (here's the kicker!) spontaneously burst into song! Well, it ended up being that I only sang once... at the microphone. But I have to admit it was awesome. Someone Like You from Jekyll and Hyde A Capella! I nailed it. And I got "really long" applause and some amazing compliments. The best part of the night, however, was sitting next to Amy Byrd! What a woman! I don't know if I can explain everything... but I'll just say she brought a flask and borrowed my Dr. Pepper at one point. As some random woman exclaimed after the dinner, "Amy Byrd, you are a damn sexy woman!" I got many tipsy embraces from that bundle of fun. My new favorite person!
On Friday night, I went to the Cattle Call Queen Coronation. As was expected, Alexis Brown was crowned, with Alisa Taylor and Amanda Leckband as 1st and 2nd princesses. Now, here's my beef. The speeches sucked! Horrible. And I wrote Amanda a killer speech that would have won it for her. She didn't use it. Instead, she wrote some stupid guardian angel speech.
And Sarah O'Brien, the freshman I've been speech coaching for the Teen Queen contest, didn't win. Nevertheless, I am so proud of her. She's a wonderful young woman. She's amazing on a horse and she had an awesome speech.
What else??? I finally sent off my interview questions to Edward Albee specialists for my Senior Paper.
I have an essay test on Gulliver's Travels tomorrow that I need to study for.
I need to write my questions for Mock Trial tomorrow morning.
Mr. C told me I could direct next semester's play.
Um... I started applying to colleges! I'm filling out my USC application. So far, my list is:
USC, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, CSU Northridge, CSU Fullerton. I'm also looking into Northwestern. If anyone has ideas for schools with good theatre programs, let me know!
Well, I've got to get some sleep. Keep reading!

Dylan Will Not Leave the Cuckoo's Nest
Well everyone, usually it takes me about... five days to four months to get over quote unquote "miscasting". I got over it this time by the next day. To all who were offended by that last post, sorry. Most of the offensive stuff was only in jest. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this show. I think it will be a good one. I'm sure everyone will come through well. Mr. C has always had a great eye for potential. It's only failed him a few times, and he's been well aware of it. He knows what he's doing. Frankly, Reina is happy about me getting Harding. She says the one time I read for it at callbacks, I rocked it. Apparently, I can act almost-gay very well. And I'm milking it, people. At least I'm not going to have to argue with Mr. C not to pull my pants down. THAT was agony. Thank God I got my way. I mean, I want to retain some dignity onstage. In college, sure. In high school... it would have been all I am remembered for.
And hey, on Sparknotes and Cliffsnotes, I'm one of only four characters that have "in-depth analysis" links! It's gonna be fine. Thanks to Caitlin, who reminded me that her boat had bigger holes in it. Thanks to my mom for providing me with the birth control information a bunch of girls asked me about. (My mom's a lactation consultant.) Thanks to whomever. I would have posted sooner about my anger dying down, but I've been unbelievably busy with this whole LA/DC thing.
Speaking of that, I drove from Yucaipa to LA and from LA all the way home! It was really fun. C'mon... a really bumpy freeway, speeds up to 85... or more... awesomeness. Although I regret drinking that nasty Jack-in-the-Box soda and eating the burger... usually, the employees there don't try to make me throw up. And I shouldn't have eaten that extremely greasy pizza either. That was horrendous. And I found out how to spell "eminent domain." I misspelled it "imminent". Hey now... not all of us are Akeelah Anderson's. The kids were all nice. I knew one already from the Law Institute. One of the moms was a bit controlling. Yiesh!
Anyway... I'm hungry. I missed school today cuz I'm sick and now I'm gonna go get some food. Tah-tah... that sounded so stupid. Later...

Dylan Says "Screw the Cuckoo's Nest"
NOTE TO READERS: I will not delete this entry. I feel that it is actually very... relevant to the way actors perceive rejection. I did edit the bad words. Though, as I say in the next post, they were mostly in jest. More to make me feel a little better. I love this cast and this play and it's really really fun. Anyway, read on, but know that this is only like 5% of the real me. Be glad I'm not being Mr. Fake on the internet! And enjoy... an actor's lament!
Thank God nobody I know f'reakin' reads this blog. Thank God nobody reads this blog. I would get into huge trouble for this post if anyone did.
What the hell. I just had to put that out there. Ladies and Gentlemen, what - the - hell. Yes. I was wrong. Today was a horrible day with one semi-okay hour.
Sorry. I have to say it one more time. WHAT THE HELL. I've paid my dues, okay? I mean, come on! I paid my freaking dues!! For those of you who care... which means no one because no one reads this crap, NO, I did not get McMurphy. I'm in my anger stage right now. Allow me to explain to you the stages of mourning over a lost part.
1.) Cosmic Realization- "Oh... golly gee, I-I guess I didn't get it. Wow... I-I-... wow."
2.) Burdensome Sadness- Extreme grief. Pressure-filled grief. Hollowing Grief.
3.) Longing For Pathos- The need for someone to feel sorry for you.
4.) Sadness From Lack Of Pathos- "No one even cares. Everyone sucks. I hate my life. I suck."
5.) Anger- "Well, So-and-so is going to suck. Just watch. I'll bet Mr. C is going to completely regret it."
6.) Extreme Anger- "WHAT THE HELL!!"
7.) Extreme-er Anger- "Screw 'em. I've paid my freaking dues. And what do I get?"
8.) Thought Of Leaving- "Whatever. I'll just drop and then that maggot of an a-hole Mr. C will realize how badly he got it wrong.
There you go. There's really no getting over it. You'll always look back on the finished product and think, "I could have done that better.
Here is why I thought I would get it: I have proven myself loyal. I have never quit a BUHS play. Never. I have never complained about getting a part I don't want... aloud... to Mr. C. I have always done way more than my share in every play. I know and respect tech theater. I'm smart. I'm in the top percent of my class. I study these plays. I create a character. I make everything original. I try. I try so freaking hard. I've never had backstage drama. I've never miss rehearsals for the heck of it. I care. And I think I'm good.
I also know that Mr. C knows me. He knows that I get very upset about casting through the grapevine. He knows. Yet he still screws me so. I like to tell myself it's because he wants me to succeed in theatre and is therefore letting me experience rejection so I'm not a stranger to it. I also like to tell myself I will find true love one day. Haha!
Okay, aside from personal qualities and past records, I thought I would get it since I read for that part four out of five times at callbacks. Also, the person that did get that part didn't even show up for the callbacks. And during his initial audition, he screwed up his monologue and almost broke a window while pounding on it out of anger. And, it doesn't help that when we were in seventh grade, he randomly said out loud in class, "Dylan likes to get butt-f*cked!" You guys, I had no idea what that even meant. But when thirty kids are laughing at you and you have no real friends, somehow you know it's not good.
I really want to quit. I'd rather screw this play and work really hard on Mock Trial. I'm honestly standing on the precipice here. I need to decide by the end of this week. Rehearsals start Monday.
This was my last chance. We aren't doing a musical at all, Palmer is closed down, the most we'll do next semester is a goddamn Melodrama and I'm going to decide by Friday if I should just screw it all. My last chance is gone.
Here's the cast. I was wrong about everything save Billy.
McMurphy- Tyler Whatshisname
Ratched- Haley Saracusa
Billy- Anthony
Candy- Katie Someone
Sandra- Ashlyn
Harding- Me
I'm depressed. And I will be for quite some time. I was so excited for this. I was going to work really hard. Now... screw working out with Alex. Screw that. Screw this play. Screw life. If you think I'm being a baby, screw you too. I'm mad. And when I went to the Donut Shop for a cheer-me-up Dr. Pepper... The cup broke when I was driving. Soda all over my passenger seat.
I hate life. Life hates me.

I'll Elaborate...
I have nothing better to do, so I figured I'd post. Hm... what to say... I guess I'll elaborate on my feelings about the audition.
After, I felt like total crap. I hated myself, as I often do. Alex called me and asked if I'd go meet her and Jeff at Tacos & Beer to see her new haircut. It's a really cool haircut. But I couldn't get my mind off of how I hated myself for sucking. I was pissed and sad and crazed... blah blah blah. Not to mention the fact that I've been thinking of Samantha an awful lot these days.
On Thursday, It will have been three months. That's a quarter of a year. Three months ago this Thursday, I was sitting at the La Jolla Playhouse with Jennie and Mom watching Maria Eberline dance her ass of in CARMEN. Three months ago, I heard the song "What I See." Three months ago, I got the voice mails. I got the phone call. Three fucking months ago from Next Wednesday I had to wake up early and drive to Mervyns with Mom and buy dress clothes that weren't black. And this Christmas Eve, it will have been one year since Sam, Alanna, Alex and I played that card game at my party.
I don't know why I'm bringing all of this up. It's not hurting me as far as I know. I just feel... disconnected with life when I think about it.
Sorry. Anyway, I'm pissed at myself and all around melancholy because I'm getting all sentimental, and I'm just my normal, pissy, moody self. So I could hardly enjoy my delicious Southwestern Burger. Yum.
Upon what should I elaborate next? Well, I mentioned my weird anxieties. I am constantly afraid of what other people think even though I know that they are too busy thinking about themselves. It doesn't matter. I hate doing things in front of people who don't know me. It's like, they can think anything they want because they don't know me and therefore don't have to be nice to me in their heads. Onstage I can mime sucking a cow's udder in front of thousands of strangers, but I can't work out in front of people. I can't eat alone at a restaurant. I can't get ice cream alone. I can't stand in font of a Healthy Burger eatery because I'm afraid people will think I'm trying to loose weight. It's stupid and crazy, I know. There's tons more too. It's ridiculous. I'm crazy.
I'll end it there.
OH WAIT! NO I WON'T!!! You don't know this yet, but I went to a Summer Law Institute at UCLA this past summer. Anyway, I loved it, and I apparently did well because they called and asked me (and I've said yes) to fly to Washington DC and stay at the HYATT, ALL EXPENSES PAID and INTERVIEW THE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES OF THE UNITED STATES. Oh... and they're FILMING IT. I had to give up my Jersey Boys tickets, but hopefully someone will buy them off of stubhub or craigslist. I'll be gone the 4-7!!! At the HYATT! FOR FREE! TALKING WITH THE SUPREME COURT!
Can you believe it? I hardly can. I'm missing school Wednesday to go up to LA for an orientation to draft my questions. There's six seniors from California and 40 across the nation in all. And I'm one of them. BUHS has never seen something this big. Jeez, I just keep garnering my school more and more publicity. The Rotary Speech Contest, Drama, Mock Trial, RYLA, and now the SUPREME COURT! Mr. Mungia needs to start giving me a commission.
It is now 11:17. I must go to bed so I can suffer through Civics, continue designing my CD, and puddy the stage floor of Palmer.
That reminds me: The cast list will be posted tomorrow for Cuckoo's Nest. I have a feeling this is what it will be:
Randle P. McMurphy - 90% chance it's me
Nurse Ratched - Juanita Necessary or Kayleen Landy
Chief Bromden - Can't Remember His Name but I'm Very Sure
Dr. Spivey - Melissa
Billy Bibbit - Anthony Grummit
Dale Harding - Who Knows... 10% chance it's me.
Candy Starr - Haley Saracusa
I'll let you know tomorrow if I was right. These were all judging from the readings at the callbacks.
Until then, keep reading... that's somewhat of an empty phrase. Who the hell is reading?
-Big D
